Gravel fans can now search Komoot for ready-made gravel riding Routes, with over 160,000 already available worldwide, all of which can be browsed and search results personalised using Route filters.
At launch, Komoot is calling this the biggest feature update for gravel riders since it launched the Gravel Route Planner and Trail View.
- Gravel Routes are based on the most popular off-road trails in local cycling communities and are generated by Komoot’s routing capability.
- Over 160,000 Gravel Routes – this number is constantly growing – on an interactive map which also shows their star rating based on community reviews
- Each recommended Route can be navigated immediately, saved for later or adjusted to user preferences if needed.
Jonas Spengler, co-founder and CTO at Komoot comments: “Combining industry-leading technology with community insights and tips is at the heart of what we do at Komoot.
“Our community plays a key role in our product development: we invest a lot of resources into user research because we want to design features that can truly fulfil our users’ needs and expectations.
Routing that learns from community expertise
Behind the new Gravel Routes search is Komoot’s smart routing algorithm, which combines community-based insights with its mapping system – delivering Routes based on the most popular off-road trails in local cycling communities worldwide
The routing algorithm only includes safe and responsible tracks, prioritising unpaved surfaces suitable for gravel bikes and favouring the most popular trails and Highlights amongst gravel cyclists.
Using suggestions, tips, and photos from local experts, and detailed up-to-date map data Komoot’s algorithm focuses on what gravel cyclists want from a cycling route.
Each recommended Route can be immediately navigated, saved for later or customised in the Komoot Route Planner if needed.
After the ride, users can rate Tours, upload images from the trail and add Highlights (user recommendations), so that the whole gravel community has a detailed insight into the best adventures, and to contribute to the continuous improvement of the gravel Route search results and coverage.
Tom Eldred, product manager, Komoot, comments: “Our community’s feedback is pivotal to developing features that tangibly help people explore more of the great outdoors.
“We launched the new Gravel Routes to indulge our users’ desire for ready-made gravel adventures — ones that are both easy to search and reliable to navigate worldwide.
“Allowing gravel riders to find ready-made routes at the tap of a button is just another step towards a product that aims at making adventures more accessible and more enjoyable for everyone.”
